How are umbrellas made step by step in China’s factory?

1.1 Preparation of raw materials for umbrella frame

Chinese factories will use different grades of raw materials according to the positioning of umbrellas. The commonly used materials for umbrella frames and poles are high-grade steel, aluminium or fibreglass poles, which are both strong and flexible, and can effectively improve the wind resistance and durability of the umbrellas.

1.2 Cutting, Straightening and Heat Treatment

Firstly, the workers will cut the raw material into the length that meets the specification through the special cutting equipment. Then, the cut poles will be straightened to ensure that the poles are flat and free of bending, so as to avoid affecting the subsequent assembling. Lastly, the poles will be heat-treated, so as to further enhance the strength and flexibility, and to make the umbrella frames and poles more durable.

2.2 Triangle Panel Cutting

After the strip fabric is cut, the next step is to cut it into triangular sheets – the basic unit that makes up the umbrella. In Chinese factories, this step is mostly done by hand: the worker makes a wooden triangular frame, places the frame in position on the fabric, and then carefully cuts the triangular pieces with a razor blade.

2.3 Pattern Printing in Custom Umbrella

After the pattern printing is completed, the workers will use sewing machines to sew the triangular pieces one by one, stitching them together to form a complete umbrella. 2.5 Installation of umbrella bead

After the umbrella is sewn together, beads are installed at each corner of the umbrella. The beads are made of plastic or iron and come in a variety of shapes. The core function of the beads is to connect the top of the umbrella with the umbrella bone, to fix the position of the umbrella and to prevent the edges of the umbrella from fraying.
